Scoping Scale of Intervention
Thursday, April 7, 2022 5:31 AMThis measure is linked to the size and complexity of the work being carried out. 1000 sq.km is proposed as a guideline here but other factors need to be considered such as: the number of activities & projects that influence freshwater, the size of the freshwater basin in comparison with the area the project aim to influence, etc.
A field site, then, is a relatively homogeneous parcel of land (may or may not be contiguous) that is the target of a narrow range of interventions. Measurements then built around the type of intervention would be sufficient to monitor progress in this scale of intervention.
A landscape or basin is a large and heterogenous parcel of land with multiple uses of freshwater and different stakeholder groups in different parts. It is overall a significantly more complex system than field sites and a more holistic framework of measurement will be required to cover tangible and non-tangible elements of freshwater health over this scale of intervention.
